AI Strategy Is Really a Human Behavior Strategy
Recently I read a thoughtful article from Chris Hood arguing that many organizations misunderstand AI strategy. His core point is exactly right.
AI strategy is really a data strategy.
But after years working inside CRM systems and revenue environments, I would take the idea one step deeper. Data strategy is really a human behavior strategy.
The Hidden Problem Behind "Bad Data"
When executives talk about AI challenges, the conversation usually focuses on things like:
  • data architecture
  • system integration
  • governance models
  • vendor platforms
Those things matter. But they are rarely the real reason the data is unreliable.
In most organizations, the deeper problem is much simpler. The human behaviors that create and maintain the data are inconsistent.
Over the years I have audited many CRM environments. In several cases, as much as 30–50 percent of the data was incomplete, outdated, or simply wrong.
Not because the technology failed. Because people interacted with the system very differently.
Some individuals were disciplined about updating records and keeping information accurate. Others entered only partial data. Some skipped fields entirely. And many simply stopped updating records once the deal moved forward.
Over time the system slowly fills with inconsistent information that nobody fully trusts.
Now imagine building AI insights on top of that foundation.
A Lesson From Early in My Career
Years ago while working inside a Fortune 500 company, I ran into a moment that perfectly illustrates the human side of data quality.
An employee was reviewing a customer record and pointed out that a key piece of information was incorrect.
I asked how he knew the data was wrong.
He pointed to the history on the record and said it had been entered by someone named Jones.
Apparently Jones had developed a reputation for entering sloppy data.
So I asked the obvious follow-up question. "What did you do about it? Did you talk to Jones about it so he could fix it?"
He shrugged and said, "I did Nothing. Jones is a pain in the ass to deal with, and my boss cares about bigger things."
So the incorrect data stayed in the system. Everyone who looked at that record later would rely on information that someone already knew was wrong.
Multiply that behavior across thousands of records and something predictable happens. The system slowly drifts away from reality.
No software failure caused the problem. It was simply a human decision to tolerate bad data.
Data Quality Is a Behavioral System
Most organizations treat data quality as a technical issue. In reality, it functions as a behavioral system.
Reliable data depends on four behaviors operating consistently across the organization.
The Human Data Quality Loop
Creation — Entering accurate and complete data the first time.
Prevention — Avoiding shortcuts that introduce errors into the system.
Detection — Recognizing when information looks inconsistent or incorrect.
Correction — Fixing the data once the issue is discovered.
Most companies focus almost entirely on the first step. They design required fields, validation rules, and entry forms to ensure information gets entered initially. But the other three behaviors are rarely defined.
What should someone do when they notice an error? Should they fix it themselves? Notify the owner of the record? Escalate it to a manager? Ignore it?
If the organization has not established clear expectations around those decisions, the most common outcome is simple. People move on. They have other work to do.
Why AI Exposes the Problem
Artificial intelligence does not create data problems. It exposes them.
AI systems are extremely good at identifying patterns and generating insights from the information they receive. If the underlying data reflects reality, AI can be incredibly powerful.
But if the data is incomplete, inconsistent, or unreliable, AI will simply produce unreliable outputs faster and at scale.
The model is not malfunctioning. It is doing exactly what it was designed to do. It is learning from the behaviors embedded in the data.
Data as a Strategic Asset
Organizations that succeed with AI tend to share one important trait. They treat data as a strategic asset that everyone is responsible for protecting.
That means leaders establish clear expectations around questions like:
  • Who owns the accuracy of a record?
  • What should someone do when they discover incorrect information?
  • Is data quality part of performance expectations?
  • Do managers reinforce good data discipline in everyday operations?
Without those behavioral norms, data quality slowly erodes. And when AI is layered on top of that system, the results are often disappointing.
Executive Takeaway
Many leaders assume their AI challenges are technical. Often they are behavioral.
AI strategy absolutely requires strong data. But strong data does not come from better models or better tools. It comes from disciplined human behavior.
If an organization tolerates inconsistent data practices, AI will amplify those inconsistencies. If the organization reinforces disciplined data habits, AI becomes dramatically more powerful.
Technology rarely fixes operational behavior.
But it will always expose it.
And in the age of AI, that exposure is happening faster than most organizations expect.
